Siemens Microwaves

Many people think of Siemens as a German company and although it did indeed begin in Berlin it has been established in the UK for over 160 years and have a very large manufacturing presence here. This means that back up and spares are easy to get. Their microwave range is quite small, with prices between around £250 to £650 and there is not too much cutting edge technology, but the high quality build level that is expected of Siemens means that they last and last and will always give a good level of performance.

Siemens microwaves have quite large oven cavity sizes and this means that larger items can easily be accommodated and with differing settings on the microwave output, usually up to 1000 watts, a variety of foods can be cooked. Some of the higher end microwave ovens in the range have a variety of shelf positions, which is quite unusual in a microwave and means that more than one item can be cooked at once, without using separators.

Step Cooking

In microwave cooking or reheating there are often steps in the process and Siemens microwaves include (in some models) an automatic programmable three step cooking feature. This allows for the usual things like one minute on high, a minute standing, two minutes on low that we all know from the frozen curry pack. This is also handy though for cooking from scratch. Even something as simple as scrambled egg is quite complex in the microwave as it needs to rest and allow the cooking process to continue with stored power and at a busy breakfast time in the kitchen this would be a helpful feature if the microwave could do that timing for you.

Adjustable Power

With a maximum power level of 1000 watts Siemens microwaves are the hard hitters of the microwave world and so sometimes you will need less, especially for reheating more delicate things like pancakes or fish. A range of power settings is very helpful here as a very quick blast of a strong level is not the equivalent of longer at a lower setting, causing disruption of delicate textures and everyone who has taken an exploded piece of salmon out of the microwave knows exactly what happens there! Microwaves are sent out into the cavity of the oven at different rates at different power levels and so 'excite' the electrons in the food to different intensity. If it is too powerful the heat created is too much, too fast and things like fish will respond by disintegrating. Think baked beans which have been left in the microwave for too long and you will understand the process. A bean is enclosed in a light 'shell' and this will pop if the level is too high. Even a baked bean deserves the best.

Stainless Steel

Not all microwaves are lined with stainless steel as Siemens ones are and this makes a big difference to the light levels inside. A shiny inside makes the light production better and in microwave cooking it is important to keep an eye on what is going on inside as a few seconds could make the difference between cooked to perfection and ruined. As well as better visibility, it is really easy to keep clean, as the surface is really smooth and a wipe when it is warm is usually all it needs. A good tip is to microwave a cup of water every couple of uses and then wipe down the interior immediately. The steam will have softened any baked on residue which will then wipe off easily with just a cloth. An ecloth or microfibre one will do the job even more easily. Keeping microwaves clean is a job that no one likes but it is easy to do if a small amount of thought is given to it regularly; a stainless steel inside makes it less of a chore.
